Extreme hydro-meteorological events, such as inland flooding, coastal storms and severe water scarcity, have major social, economic and environmental impacts. These adverse impacts may be exacerbated by climate change. It is therefore important to better understand extreme events and water security challenges, and to take action to reduce increasing risks. In particular, there is a need to adopt strategies to increase the resilience of cities and critical infrastructure. The aim of the LNEC Lisbon Conference 2023 is to discuss how the research community, in collaboration with local authorities and citizens, can contribute with tools and solutions to address these water-related challenges.

About the LNEC Lisbon Conference series

LNEC conducts scientific research and technological development in all areas of civil engineering, including infrastructure, housing and the environment. As part of its mission, LNEC is responsible for anticipating knowledge and solution needs and promoting best practices. To this end, LNEC is launching this year the LNEC Lisbon Conferences series, consisting of an annual international conference for strategic debate on emerging or highly relevant topics in its areas of activity. The theme of these conferences, relevant to the management and safety of cities and other territories, will be chosen each year to cover all the R&D activities of this national laboratory. This year's conference is organised by the Hydraulics and Environment Department.

The Municipality of Lisbon is a strategic partner of LNEC for this series of conferences. Lisbon is committed to the goals of sustainability, eco-efficiency and climate neutrality, and intends to continue implementing solutions that lead to a more resilient city.
